A somewhat older adult student confided to me

that he normally let his colleagues answer the phone at work because they all spoke ‘better’ English than he did.  I tried to persuade him to take some calls himself, but he was just too insecure.  One day a supplier from the Czech Republic called while he was alone in the office, and he had to answer.  Neither one of them spoke English very well, but they understood each other and laughed together when they tripped over vocabulary.  He was so happy about this experience that he called me right afterwards to let me know.
